How to Host the Perfect Gathering

How in the word are we already at week 6 of the Spring 2021 One Room Challenge in Partnership with Better Homes & Garden!? If you are just now finding me, then welcome! Last week's post can catch you up on what has been going on over the last few weeks in this kids' playroom makeover. This room is starting to really come together for the One Room Challenge.

How it's going

Last week before we left for Mexico, we were able to get the room flipped around and that made such a big difference.

We have been gone the entire week between our family vacation and then having to be in Wisconsin for a memorial service my husband's grandpa. But while we were gone, the tree and two of the art prints I had ordered were delivered and I unboxed the tree and rolled out the art. And I must say, I love them both. Here is what the room looked like as of today!

what we have accomplished

Here is the checklist that I have been working off of over the last few weeks. Each week I love to check off what I have accomplished and fill you in on what has been going on with each checklist item.

  1. A brand new color palette - This one one of the first things I chose and I still love the taupes, white, black, gray, chestnut and dark blue color palette we have going on.
  2. Paring down and donating - This has been a process and I think we could still get rid of just a few more things, but really it's more about where to put what is left.
  3. Add desks -The desks are great. My kids have already been using them for summer Brain Quest books and a few crafts.
  4. Get a new rug - At this point, I don't think my original choice is going to come in, so I have started looking for alternate options that will arrive in time. You can see that mood board below.
  5. Organization! - It's a work in process. I will be buying some new bins and baskets this week for legos and some remaining toys, but we moved the old bookcases into 2 of my kids' rooms and a lot of toys will be going in there and out of the playroom.
  6. Reorient the room - Done and I love it!
  7. Add drapery rods and panels - I'm leaning towards a velvet cream colored panel, similar to what I used in my daughter's room for the last ORC.
  8. Add art - 2 of my larger art pieces from North & Finch came in and I am obsessed! My biggest hurdle will be finding frames for them and then I still need to frame my digital prints and get those here in time.
  9. Add an accent wall - I am leaning towards doing peel and stick wallpaper on the wall behind the desks and TVs and then doing a piece of trim above it. The wall is tall, so I was thinking maybe going about 8 feet up the wall, which is about 2/3 of the way up. My 2 favorite options are below.
  10. Add other new furniture - Definitely need to find a chair for the corner and probably an end table as well.

Inspiration

The board looks a little different without the original rug, but I think it can still work. I want to find a really great chair for the corner, but with the new rug having so much pattern and the wallpaper options also being pretty patterned, I feel like the chair should be solid. The sofa and carpet are both pretty dark, so I am leaning towards a lighter chair option to keep it from feeling too blah. Below is the new design board and the one that I had done a few weeks ago.

Here a few chair moments that are inspiring me at the moment. I think I love the idea of an oversized swivel chair. I found a pretty cream one from Living Spaces and I think I should just pull the trigger and get it...It's the last one pictured below.

This room is coming together and I am excited about the final result that I get to share with you in just a couple of weeks!

In the meantime, make sure you check out the featured designers and other fellow guest designers. There are some really great projects going on! I am so thankful to be a part of this and to finish up this room over the next few weeks.
